Head of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities of VNTU, Ph.D., Professor Oleh Khoma was awarded with the prize of H.Skovoroda for the best translation of the book “Meditations” of Descartes in the Mirror of Modern Interpretations: Jean-Mari Beysad, Jean-Luc Marion, Kim Sun On-Wang-Kun” from French into Ukrainian, which was published by the “Spirit and Letter” with the support of French Institute and the Embassy of France in Ukraine.
Mr Khoma says:
"The official release of the award “Skovoroda”, which has recently been awarded to the book “Meditations” of Descartes in the Mirror of Modern Interpretations... ” (publishing house “Spirit and Letter”, Kyiv, 2014), traditionally referres only to a translator and a publisher. This is due to the Statute of the Prize, which is awarded solely for translations from French.
But it would be fair to mention all those who have made a significant contribution to the creation of this book. Indeed, for the Ukrainian philosophical and humanitarian community the role of this publication goes beyond the issues of the prize – it is the search for modern scientific publishing standard for classical philosophical texts regardless of their language or era. After all, the book was born from the project of publishing a complete collection of philosophical texts by Descartes, which I have been working with since 2005. Descartes is known to have left texts not only in French but also in Latin and even in Dutch, so they go beyond the formal boundaries of the program “Skovoroda”.
So, first of all I’d like to mention Andrii Baumeister, Associate Professor of Philosophy at T. Shevchenko National University in Kyiv.
The book was not able to achieve its goal without creating very complex original layout that required great diligence and creativity of Heorhii Bahdasarian (Computer information-publishing center of VNTU).
It should be noted artist Iryna Pasternak who has created the highly successful cover.
The great work has also been done by young researchers Pavlo Bartusiak (a post-graduate student of philosophy of VNTU, 2013), Tetiana Polianychka and Yuliia Novikova (students of Philosophy Faculty of Kyiv National University named after T. Shevchenko, 2013).
It is necessary to assess properly the contribution of publishers Kostiantyn Sihov and Leonid Finberh who risked to include this purely academic (and therefore a very doubtful in commercial terms) project into the plans of the “Spirit and Letter”.
Finally, we should say good words about the Abbot of Saint-Sulpice Seminary near Paris, Father Didier Berte.
Consequently, “Meditations” of Descartes in the Mirror of Modern Interpretations...” is the offspring of long-term and joint efforts of a number of people. However, this award is a wonderful occasion to reflect on the present state of our publishing of philosophical books. Some thoughts on this subject I would venture to propose in the near future.”
