Vladyslav Okhov, a fourth-year student of the Faculty of Power Engineering and Electromechanics of Vinnytsia National Technical University, the chairman of Vinnytsia Union of the National Scout Organization of Ukraine “Plast”, has the idea to create its branch at VNTU
“I became a member of “Plast” in 2014; I began my activity in Kalynivka center. This is my hometown. I immediately liked bing involved in this movement. I began to take on administrative duties. Having become a student of VNTU, I headed Vinnytsia “Plast”. Here I deal with two groups of children. One group consists of 16-year-old teenagers, the other group consists of 11-year-old children. Members of “Plast” train, go to camps in nature and comprehensively develop. But we have few staff of my age who can help children develop. Therefore, we had got the idea to make local centers at universities. For students it is a conscious choice to take assume responsibility,” says Vladyslav Okhov. He decided to start with the alma mater.
The students of Podilskyi Lyceum for Gifted Youth acting at VNTU have already interested in thts idea, too.
On October 14, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko took part in the celebration on the occasion of the opening ceremony of “Plast” center in Bucha, Kyiv region.
“I was also at these celebrations. The President in his welcoming speech to the participants remarked that he was very impressed with our slogan that means the essential qualities of good scouts. They should:
- have a strong mind and body,
- have a kind heart,
- be careful about their plans and aims,
- be quick in thoughts and deeds.
The President stressed that every patriot of our state should have such qualities,” continues Vladyslav.
Now Vinnytsia “Plast” is preparing for the action “Bethlehem Peace Flame” timed to Christmas. Scouts from different countries are spreading the fire from Bethlehem around the world, first of all, to shelters, hospitals, state institutions, schools, and orphanages. “Plast” members go to Bethlehem themselves. This is a great opportunity to go abroad for a minimal amount of money.
“We have got regional, inter regional and oversea camps. We are friends with similar organizations in Poland and Hungary. Most of the camps are in nature where participants learn the basics of survival in extreme conditions. Voluntary entry into “Plast” obliges people to work on themselves and stimulates the desire to become better every day. This approach contributes to the patriotic education and self-education of Ukrainian youth. I had a personal problem — I was bad at public speaking. With the help of “Plast” I got rid of it. You just should know clearly what you want to improve in yourself,” says Vladyslav Okhov.
“Plast” is the largest youth organization in Ukraine. Formed in 1911“Plast” celebrated its centenary seven years ago. Under Soviet rule “Plast” was banned and was displaced by pioneers.
