Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, leading specialist of the Center for Educational Work of VNTU, participant of the team Olena SLOBODIANIUK:
‒ What was the purpose of the Program?
The Leadership Development Program of Ukrainian Universities is an innovative project to build a culture of leadership in Ukrainian higher education. The program combines a set of training modules from the leading trainers of the Leadership Foundation in Higher Education (UK), the opportunity to have a study visit to the UK partner college as well as leadership practices in the form of work on an institutional change project.
‒ How was the VNTU team formed?
University teams were built in the “5 + 2” format (7 people) who teamed up to work on a project of innovations to develop the university. Five people participated in the Team Leadership component and 2 people participated in the Young Leaders component.
Team members represented all the units of the university community – managerial (rector), administrative, academic and student ones. The idea was activities of the representatives of the university community (from the rector to students) in the format of “horizontal” interaction.
‒ How would you formulate the main opportunities for VNTU team to participate in the Program?
At an institutional level, the university was able to form an effective team; in turn, the team began the implementation of the project “Formation of a culture of academic integrity in the student environment” that will promote the quality of education at VNTU and consolidate a positive image among future entrants and employers; the Innovation Training Center began its activity at the University, etc.
At a personal level, each member of the team analyzed and revealed their own leadership potential; defined the priority directions for personal and professional development.
‒ What do you think is your main achievement in the project?
Firstly, the experience of implementing the principles of academic integrity at Northumbria University (the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Newcastle) is important. Secondly, each team member trained on academic integrity, strategies for team activities and innovative teaching technologies.
‒ What are your further steps?
The team is not only inspired but also inspires. The First Academic Assembly that was successfully completed on March 1 became an indicator for further steps. Soon the training on mastering modern teaching technologies and methods will take place in the Innovation Training Center. We are going to have the meeting of the university community with Yevhen Baranchenko, a senior lecturer of the Department of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Strategy of the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle.
